The use of slang is one of the things that draws English learners attention because it is fun and interesting at the same time. Slang words are commonly seen being used in songs, tv series and movies; that’s why students are so crazy about them. But what exactly is slang?
O uso de gírias é uma das coisas que chama a atenção dos alunos de inglês porque são divertidas e interessantes ao mesmo tempo. As gírias são comumente usadas em músicas, séries de TV e filmes, por isso os alunos são tão fascinados por elas. Mas o que exatamente são as gírias?
Well, it is hard to come up with a picture perfect definition but let’s consider a few characteristics of slang:
Bem, é dificil chegar a uma definição perfeita mas consideremos algumas características das gírias:
-> When interacting with someone, the use of slang is basically informal, way less serious and often non-standard language.
-> Quando interagindo com alguém, o uso de gírias é basicamente informal, muito menos sério e geralmente não utiliza o padrão linguístico.
-> Slang words usually come from specific groups of people who are familiar with the terms and use them with each other. For instance, we can mention the hip-hop slang, the teenage slang, etc.
-> Gírias geralmente se originam de grupos específicos de pessoas que são familiarizadas com os termos e uso das gírias entre eles. Por exemplo, podemos mencionar as gírias de hip hop e as gírias de adolescentes, etc.
-> Slang is commonly used to describe sensitive topics like sex, insults, criticisms or even to talk about things in a more likely playful or less formal way.
As gírias são comumente usadas para descrever assuntos delicados como sexo, insultos, críticas ou mesmo para falar sobre coisas em um tom de brincadeira ou informalmente.
Having all those characteristics in mind, it is important to mention that English language learners should have a good understanding of slang in general so that they can avoid embarrassing situations when dealing with native speakers as well as they must know slang words should never be used for academic purposes or in professional situations or else when they are attending a formal social event.
Tendo todas essas características em mente, é importante mencionar que os alunos de língua inglesa devem ter um bom entendimento de gírias no geral para que possam evitar situações constrangedoras ao lidar com falantes nativos, também devem saber que gírias nunca devem ser usadas para fins acadêmicos ou em situações profissionais ou então quando estiverem participando de um evento social formal.
If you really want to use slang in English, do it when you are having fun with your friends but be aware of not using it with your teachers, at church or with your grandparents. Show those people the respect they deserve and avoid informal language.
Se você realmente quer usar gírias em inglês, faça isso quando estiver se divertindo com seus amigos, mas fique atento para não usá-las com seus professores, na igreja ou com seus avós. Mostre o respeito que essas pessoas merecem e evite a linguagem informal.
You should also keep in mind that slang changes swiftly as new expressions are made up constantly, others, on the other hand, go out of fashion after some time, so it is important to update your slang knowledge, this way you can avoid getting yourself into embarrassing situations.
Você também deve ter em mente que as gírias mudam rapidamente à medida em que novas expressões são inventadas constantemente, outras, por outro lado, saem de moda depois de algum tempo, por isso é importante atualizar seu conhecimento de gírias, desse modo você pode evitar situações constrangedoras.
